Here are four images from the Sony a7r and the Contaz Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Planar. The four shots are full frame, 1.5x clear image zoom to match APS-C, a7r in APS-C mode, and 2X clear image zoom in APS-C mode. The images were then cropped to match a 2X clear image zoom in APS-C mode. The 50mm lens now provides a field of view of 150mm with 2X clear image zoom APS-C mode on the a7r.  See the images below and determine if CIZ is something you should try.  Please rank the images from best to worst.

What is Clear Image Zoom?

Clear Image Zoom is a function that uses the Sony® exclusive By Pixel Super Resolution Technology. It allows you to enlarge the image with close to the original image quality when shooting still images. The camera first zooms optically to the maximum optical magnification, then uses Clear Image Zoom technology to enlarge the image an additional 2x, producing sharp, clear images despite the increased zoom ratio.

NOTES: The Clear Image Zoom function does not operate in the following situations:

  • In Movie mode
  • In Sweep Shooting mode
  • When the Smile Shutter function is activated
  • When Drive Mode is set to Cont. Shooting, Spd Priority Cont. or Bracket: Cont.
  • When Face Detection function is activated
  • When Quality is set to RAW or RAW & JPEG
  • When ISO is set to Multi Frame Noise Reduction

How do you activate Clear Image Zoom on the Sony a7r?


  1. Set Camera to JPEG only mode.  We had ours at Extra Fine.
  2. Go to the Menu.
  3. Choose the Gear, 2nd tab.
  4. Go to the 3rd page.
  5. In Zoom Setting, choose On:ClearImageZoom
  6. Set a button, C1/C2/C3 etc, to be Zoom.
  7. Press the button on Step 6 and choose your magnification up to 2X.


We had the C3 button customized as the Zoom button. Clear Image Zoom only works in JPEG mode - no RAW.

Use Medium Format Lenses with Sony A7 Cameras

Sony A7 ii with a Mamiya 645 80mm f/1.9 lens via Kipon Baveyes Focal Reducer. Here is a review of the Kipon Baveyes medium format lens focal reducer adapter for Sony A7 cameras.  This adapter has a lens element that concentrates the medium format image circle down to the size of a 24x36mm sensor of the Sony A7 cameras with a 0.7x factor.  The 80mm lens above has an equivalent focal length of 56mm.  The concentrated light also gives us one stop of extra light.  The f/1.9 is an equivalent f/1.36, a very fast medium format lens.
