Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens on NEX-5N by Bob Israel

Bob I. posted some samples from his newest lens, the Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM lens. STM designates the stepper motor in the lens which allows the new Canon T4i to mimic the Sony NEX's continuous autofocus during video.

The Canon 40mm STM is mounted on the NEX-5N via the Conurus / Metabones EOS to NEX E-mount Smart Adapter. The Smart Adapter allows the NEX to control the aperture of the EOS lens. See our previous post here. The 40mm STM is a pancake lens and is less than an inch in thickness.

Here are some samples from the Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens, Conurus/Metabones EOS to NEX Smart Adapter, and the NEX-5N.

  1. Nice to see how the 40mm 2.8 STM sits on the NEX, but the pancake advantage is lost due to the large adapter required increasing depth plus the diameter of the lens. The lens is not a FTM lens, so you cannot take advantage of the metabones smart adapters multi mode AF/MF switch feature where switching to MF allows for auto magnify when the focus ring is grabbed. AF mode allows for standard focus peaking, with magnify still available via custom button.

I have the penF 40mm f1.4 lens mounted with a much thinner adapter plus it has a much smaller diameter so it suits the NEX better, less bulky looking, plus you get 2 stops extra light and much needed narrow depth of field for portraits

    1. What adapter are you using that is "much thinner?"

  2. I for one, don't like the auto magnify and prefer to choose it via custom button when I want it. As for the the Smart Adapter with the Pancake, the combo is still smaller than some other combos. I use the Voigtlander 35/1.2 II, a lens I absolutely love, and this lens with its slim fotodiox Leica M to NEX adapter protrudes further than the pancake/smart adapter combo. It's lighter too.

Being a canon shooter, the smart adapter allows me to use many lenses on both NEX and Canon/ This includes the Canon 14/2.8 ver. II which becomes a 21mm on the NEX. Obviously, a lot of perspectives and a variety of ways to go but since I bought the 40mm pancake for my 5DIII, using it on the NEX is a bonus!

  3. Not rubbishing the EF to NEX adapter, rather, saying its use with the 40mm STM lens is not an ideal choice.I agree with Bob, the VC 35mm 1.2 may further than using the 40mm STM and adapter, but, with the VC you are getting f1.2, so that extra protrusion can be forgiven.

  4. how's the autofocus speed performed?
